Blended learning, Web based training, Virtual classroom training – these are popular quotes in many discussion with our clients at the moment. We recognize that the landscape of training shifts heavily into the digital world. Of course, not only we as a service provider for trainings are prepared for that shift of resources. Our clients are preparing that change process massively with their resources.

But we recognize one fatal misunderstanding in the perception of what digital training means for us all in the near future. Most companies believe that an online training is cheaper than a face to face training. Yes, by the first look on it I agree with that. But if I analyze the efforts for a good training furthermore, I realize that you have to emphasis on two major aspects to make a digital training impactful:

  1. Motivation
    In a face to face classroom training, the trainer has the ability to sense the current mood of the trainees and their willingness to learn at that moment. The trainer can influence the dynamics of the group, get every participant on the dedicated level of receptivity and make sure that everyone follows the content with joy and focus. That is being challenged in a digital training, simply due to the barrier between trainer and participants – the screen.
  2. Preparation
    To ensure a motivational learning effect online, you need more time in preparation, to go through the learners path with a detailed eye on the information flow and certain recognition barriers. On top of that, every improvisation from an experienced trainer must be applied to the course in the concept stage. That makes the preparation of an impactful online training more time consuming, compared to a face to face training.
  3. Distribution
    The distribution of an online training takes place with the traveling trainer. In the digital landscape, the trainer content is delivered with digital devices & online data platforms. Since the acceptance to follow the training passionately is already thiner than in a Face to Face training, we must ensure that the technology operating the trainings management system works stabile at any time. That includes the participant´s devices (software & hardware), the internet speed and the server´s performance.

We come to the conclusion that online trainings are a hugh chance to update and enrich the learning landscape. But we also think that this trend is linked to investments that we have to be aware of. The biggest opportunity of online trainings is the scalability and the global approach.

We are sure that the blended learning approach, which links face to face coachings with live and reproducible online content is the key to success of the next decade.
